Off-Road Testing Requirements
1. Water Fording
Component-level water submersion and fording tests simulate crossing streams and flooded roads. Applies to sealed electrical connectors, body sealing components, HVAC intake systems, engine air intake, and lower body components. Standards vary by component category but exceed typical on-road water spray specifications.
2. Articulation Extremes
Jeep suspension articulation reaches extremes (particularly Wrangler and Gladiator) that impose loads on driveline, brake lines, wire harness routing, exhaust hangers, and body-frame interfaces beyond on-road duty cycles. Testing profiles must include extreme articulation load cases.
3. Thermal Cycling Extremes
Off-road use exposes components to sustained low-speed high-load operation (rock crawling, sand driving) that produces different thermal profiles than highway driving. Cooling system, brake, driveline, and engine bay component testing must reflect these profiles.
4. Sustained Water and Mud Exposure
Off-road use includes prolonged exposure to water and mud on components that would rarely see such exposure on paved-road duty. Sealing components, bearings, joints, and any component with rotating or reciprocating seals require testing under sustained exposure profiles.
5. Dust Ingress
Desert and unpaved-road driving produces dust ingress on airbox systems, HVAC intakes, electrical enclosures, and body sealing that exceeds on-road profiles. IP-rating equivalent testing at higher grades typically required.
