Warranty vs PRR: Different Metrics

Why Warranty Impact Lags
Field claims surface after real-world use, typically 6 to 18 months after production for early-life claims and 2 to 5 years for durability claims. This lag makes root cause investigation harder than for plant-level PRRs because the production process may have already shifted, control plan revisions may have occurred, and the affected production window may span months.
The Warranty Recovery Playbook
1. Field Data Collection
Gather warranty data by VIN, production date, plant, and defect mode. Warranty analytics from the customer typically identifies the affected production window, but supplier-side investigation adds sub-component and process-condition detail the customer does not have.
2. Failed Part Retrieval and Analysis
Field-returned parts are analytically valuable. Coordinate with the customer warranty organization to secure representative failed parts for teardown analysis. Root cause typically requires physical parts, not just claim data.
3. Production Trace-Back

4. Corrective Action for In-Production Parts
If the failure mode still affects current production, immediate corrective action for in-production parts is required in parallel with warranty investigation. If the failure mode has already been eliminated through prior process changes, verification data documenting the change protects against continued warranty accumulation.
5. Customer-Facing Recovery Communication
Warranty recovery includes recurring customer meetings with the OEM warranty analytics team, quarterly business reviews with elevated warranty visibility, and demonstrated improvement in warranty trend. Communication cadence matters as much as the technical fix.
Warranty Chargebacks
Warranty chargebacks from the OEM to the supplier reflect the OEM's warranty cost attributed to supplier components. Chargebacks arrive quarterly or annually, often months after the claim period, and can significantly exceed direct field claim volume when service labor, parts, and administrative overhead are included.
Long-Term Scorecard Impact
Warranty performance drives long-term program share decisions more than short-term PPM. A supplier with strong PPM but weak warranty typically loses future program awards. Warranty recovery pathways require 12 to 24 months of demonstrated improvement to fully restore scorecard position.
