What a PRR Actually Is
PRR (Problem Resolution Report) is GM's formal supplier quality event tracking system. It parallels Ford's GIR and Stellantis's TSV. When a plant quality contact issues a PRR, it enters the GM supplier quality database, begins accumulating scorecard impact, and stays open until the customer SQE confirms closure.
The First 72 Hours
Hour 0 to 4: Acknowledge and Assess
Same-day acknowledgment of the PRR notification to the plant quality contact. This is a written response, not a phone call. Establishes the supplier response tree and next-update commitment. See our first hour playbook.
Hour 4 to 24: Deploy On-Site
On-site presence at the customer plant within 24 hours for material events. This is where PRR closure velocity is actually decided. Suppliers responding remotely close PRRs 2 to 3 times slower than suppliers with on-site presence.
Hour 24 to 72: Containment Plan Documented
Written containment plan submitted to plant quality contact within 72 hours. Includes specific gauges, criteria, dates, and effectiveness verification approach. See containment management guide.
PRR Closure Sequence
- Containment complete: All suspect material inspected, quantities reported to customer
- Root cause identified: Documented via 5 Why or similar analysis, verified with data
- Permanent corrective action implemented: Process change in place, control plan updated
- Verification data collected: Statistically meaningful sample sizes demonstrating fix effectiveness
- Read-across analysis complete: Similar processes and programs assessed for the same failure mode
- 8D report submitted: Ford Global 8D format equivalent for GM programs, D1 through D8 complete
- Customer SQE closure confirmation: Formal PRR status change in the GM system
Common PRR Closure Failures
- D6 verification too thin: Three days of clean shipments is not verification. Statistically meaningful sample sizes required.
- Containment scope under-scoped: Missing supplier dock, in-transit, or customer dock coverage produces re-escapes.
- Root cause too shallow: "Operator error" is not root cause. 5 Why analysis must reach systemic factors.
- Communication cadence too slow: Silence between customer contact and closure signals disengagement.
- No read-across analysis: Fixing the specific defect without checking similar programs invites repeat PRRs.
Preventing PRRs from Compounding
